He may have been banned from conventional social media, but he was all over the
alternatives, sites like Gab, Telegram, Rumble and Truth Social. And there was a
meme of him that was still doing the rounds on Twitter. John Tyler on the beach at
Dover saying earnestly into a camera, ‘England for the English – I’m sorry, but how
is that controversial?’
Tyler was talking to a man in pink trousers. The only splash of colour among the
blacks, greys and blues. The trousers belonged to the eccentric aristocrat, Lord
Anthony Saxewell-Brooks. A knack for deliberately controversial pronouncements
and a string of illegitimate children had earned him the tabloid nickname, ‘Lord
Bonkers’. His family had owned a castle and a vast tract of land in the west country
since time immemorial. He was famous for trying to promote a return to Victorian
values, despite cheating on his wife with their nanny, marrying the nanny, and then
cheating on her with the new nanny, while simultaneously carrying on an affair with
his neighbour’s wife. He was a physically unprepossessing man, but vast wealth
evidently made him irresistible. About five years ago he’d shot at a group of activist
trespassers with a twelve-gauge shotgun. A team of expensive lawyers had got all
charges dropped. He’d been a major donor for the Conservative party before
announcing that they were too far to the left. He was now one of the backers of a
libertarian group called the ‘New Freedom Party’.
John Tyler and Lord Bonkers were laughing loudly. The British working classes
had more in common with, and shared more of the views of, the upper classes than
either of them did with the middle classes. Especially the hated metropolitan elite.
Speaking of the ‘New Freedom Party’, its leader, Roger Birkett, was chatting with
another group of men next to John Tyler’s group. They were more serious. There was
a lot of head nodding going on. They were the grown-ups at the party.
Birkett was an ex-Tory MP, famous for promoting covid/vaccines/maskwearing/
5G conspiracy theories, which had spilled over into the usual antiimmigrant,
anti-EU, anti-BBC, anti-MSM, anti-cultural Marxist, Climate Change
Denial pronouncements. It was an anti-trans diatribe that had eventually got him
kicked out of the party and he’d soon after set up the ‘New Freedom Party’.
Bond was struck by something. It was a long while since he’d been at any kind of
function that was almost exclusively full of men. It felt strange. There was not even a
pretence at diversity here. Æthelstan hadn’t been the least bit concerned about
ensuring that half of the people he’d hired to carry out his coup should be women, or
non-white, or disabled. This was an unapologetically old-school gathering. In
Æthelstan’s world he was king and could do whatever he wanted. That was the
whole point, and it was why his followers loved him. These men had bought into his
fantasy, and many of them had supplied him with shock troops, who were down in the
compound at the foot of the hill. The men that Bond had promised Canner should have
all joined them by now. There was a lot of sweaty male energy in this room, a lot of
testosterone flying around. Bond couldn’t imagine what it must be like down in the
camp.
