Opis kolejnego alternatywnego zakończenia :
THE ALTERNATE ENDING JOHN CARPENTER DIRECTED FOR THE THING was in fact one long take and was shot at Universal Heartland ( Robs special effects facility ) in late December, 1981 after the company returned from location work in Stewart. It was done at the behest of Johns editor, Todd Ramsay, who was one of a growing chorus of people who objected to the open-ended nature of the final scene. It began as a slow dolly, camera facing forward, down a corridor. Movement slows as the camera pans left and stops to frame a doorway. Inside against the far wall is MacCready, shivering in his almost frozen state, sitting on a hospital gurney.. No Childs and no one else. The half - formed idea in Johns head was to make a long cross dissolve from the ending to this and to do some sort of impressionistic sound montage of a rescue taking place but the truth is he didn't think much of it ( neither did I ) and never bothered to cut it in. We never told the studio of its existence and were walking on eggshells during the big debate with Universal over the ending lest they discover it was around. I last saw it as a roll end sitting at the end of the assistant editors bench...This was the last shot made with a principal actor on THE THING and it couldn't come soon enough for Kurt Russell who I remember was itching to get his beard shaved and was urging John on to " finish the damn film, already ! "...
