Hi all,
I've seen a movie/miniseries in late 1990s that I wish to identify. Over the years, I've asked several times on IMDB (when it still had forums), but nobody knew it there. So I'm trying European discussion boards now, sorry for posting in English.
The movie revolves around a bright anomaly which is detected in deep space and which is slowly heading for Earth. Most of the plot is pretty typical - some people/governments want to keep it secret, other people want to make it public etc. This happens over the span of several years. Some governments even build and send a secret spaceship towards the anomaly, to analyze it (and neutralize it, if needed). The best part is the last 15 minutes of the movie: The spaceship approaches the anomaly and the crew starts analyzing it. Suddenly, the captain asks "Do you believe in God?" Somebody asks back "What has God to do with it (with the anomaly)?" The captain replies "Everything", implying the anomaly is God. The spaceship then disappears in anomaly's bright light and is never heard from again. Later, scientists on Earth detect unknown radiation emanating from the anomaly. When they capture, amplify and focus it on living matter (bacteria), they find it greatly accelerates its evolution. They also think the anomaly visited Earth in the distant past and started life here, effectively making it the biblical God. In the very last scene, they sit in their lab and ponder how will humans evolve when the anomaly/God arrives to Earth and the radiation will be at full strength.
Overally, the movie looked low-budget. There were a few special effects, but no CGI or other expensive stuff. Thanks in advance for any tips!
