This is loosely based on the story of Officer Frank Vasquez Trejo who was killed by the recently paroled Robert Walter Scully on March 29, 1995.
Allowing for some artistic license and fillers for dramatic effect of course, the overall story does follow the true accounts fairly accurately with the following exceptions:
Deputy Trejo was of hispanic descent, not black (though this probably wouldn't matter to a white supremacist anyway)
Garrett Tully is a fictitious name, the names of the actual persons were Robert Walter Scully and Brenda Kay Moore.
The actual family that was taken hostage consisted of Frank Cooper, 65; his girlfriend, Yolanda King, 39; her son, Jeremy King, 21; Yolanda's daughter, Karen King, 23; and Karen's son, 3, and daughter, 1. They were all black.

On March 29, 1995, between the cities of Santa Rosa and Sebastopol, California, Robert Walter Scully Jr. and Brenda Kay Moore were parked in their pickup truck outside the Santa Rosa Saddlery. Believed to be casing a nearby business to rob it, they were confronted at approximately 11:30 PM by Sonoma County Deputy Sheriff Frank Vasquez Trejo. Trejo was shot and killed instantly with a sawed-off shotgun by Scully, who then took the officer's weapon and fled with Moore to a nearby house, taking a family hostage.
After several hours, Scully and Moore surrendered to deputies. Based on these crimes, Scully was sentenced to death for first degree murder on June 14, 1997, and is currently on California's death row, awaiting execution. Moore was sentenced to 14 years.
Killed in the line of duty, Deputy Trejo was posthumously awarded a Gold Medal of Valor by the Sonoma County Sheriff's Office.
